What is the balance bar for RC helicopters for?

I lost mine, can i still make my copter fly without it?

The "fly bar" is used to keep the heli stable during flight, and no you cannot fly without it, that is unless the heli is designed and configured to fly without one, which is called a "flybar-less" setup. Flybar-less helis have specialized gyros to do the work that the flybar is supposed to do, and a "normal" heli has only a heading-lock gyro to keep the tail oriented with the controls.
